I think the idea of a National identity and pride is Universal.
from the small tribal/family unit to the state and nation level.
However, the Reality of today is that we are all Citizens of the Planet Earth
. We need to let go of the small divisions and realize that all people with Belly Buttons are in the same Boat. We all need/desire the same basic things and are equally negatively impacted
by greed, starvation, and disease. Which of you Mothers out there doesn't love her baby ? Which of you Fathers wouldn't be pissed to have your baby bombed ?
Clouds of Pollution from China circle the globe and poison all our air and water. Which mother wants to give her baby poison water ?
No, we all are in the same boat, surrounded by sea water we can't drink.
On the same little planet, surrounded by space, with nowhere to get off.

Let me clue you in on something, This is reality. In a perfect world everybody would just get along, there would be no problems, all would be right 100% of the time.
The fact is, Were not going to get along all of the time or ever actually. The reason for this is simple. There will always be twisted people on this planet. I suppose you would rather we do nothing and allow despots to do as they please? Wanna see some dead babies??, Pollution?? Famine?? Disease??

That is because, pollution affects the world on a global level, so seeing it on a local level, makes no sense. I dont know if you saw the movie "the day after tomorrow" - scientifically it's crap, but righ in the beginning there was a scene where a piece of antarctica broke away from the "mainland" - in the movie the claimed this piece was the size of Rhode Island. In 1993, this IN FACT did happen.
In Toronto we're getting smog alerts as early as MAY, we've already had at least 6 or 7 this summer. Just last year they werent around until the middle of June. I think this shows some impact of pollution on our environment.

Do you remember who was in office during Vietnam?? In another post, you refer to "Republican wars"; this wasn't a republican war (Vietnam). We didn't finish the job, remember that? Most, if not all of the previous "police actions" were attempted when a democratic president was in office (Somalia ring a bell?). Do you have ANY information that would prove your claims about those chemicals? The breast milk assertion is BS. Do you have a link or something? I think the burden of proof lies with you, since you threw out the claims. What does diabetes have to do with what we're talking about? Diabetes has an endocrinology origin. People do not have diabetes because they drink too much "Coke". They lack the naturally occuring substance in the body to process the carbohydrates or sugars. It may have a genetic predisposition, and obesity may play a part. I have been around lots of folks who have had toe/foot amputations because of diabetes, but it has nothing to do with pollution. And finally, I think your confused about who the despots are. Why do you liberals totally ignore the actions of those who cause the real damage to mankind? I think that rather than defining patriotism, it's apparent that we've defined quite the opposite on this thread. It seems that most of your posts ultimately result in blaming George Bush for everything. You have made it abundantly clear, your opinion about him. I think you are lost, so I am here to help! You don't think it makes sense that there are varying degrees of pollution all over the world? Would it not stand to reason that if it was that bad on a global level, it would appear on a local level? There are certainly varying opinions from scientists about the validity of the the global warming data. I did see the movie btw, and I was suprised to find (as ridiculous as the premise was) that I was entertained by it. Great special effects! |

No, that's the point, the Earth is HUGE, alot of people cant and dont grasp the concept of how big the Earth is. The Earth attempts to absorb this pollution as it is does with an excess of any chemical component, natural process. And in time, theoretically, all pollution can be absorbed and broken down by the Earth - this takes EONS to complete, and even then, effects of the pollution will still linger.
Take carbon dioxide, the Earth needs it to survive, but over the past 50 years, we've pumped in 170 times more CO2 into the atmosphere then the Earth can safely absorb - this aids in what is called the greenhouse effect. That is what is keeping temperatures at higher degrees, the CO2 is stopping the sun's heat from escaping.
True, but all or most should agree that temperatures are rising more and more annually, and pollutants are showing up in wildlife as well as humans more and more. Why do you think cancer is on the rise? Being from canada, where all we pretty much have here is fish, lol, the fishery business is loosing BILLIONS cuz some fish, are no longer edible, they are too polluted.
In Toronto, last year, we had our hottest day EVER recorded at 46 C (122 F) - this was in AUGUST, when temperatures SHOULD be cooling down. I remember a time in DECEMBER just a few years ago, when the temperature was 17 C (66 F) - i walked to school in light sweater and slacks and during a canadian winter, that's unheard of.
- Oh definately ;D If you can suspend your sense of reality for the 2 hours it plays, then all in all, it was a pretty good movie.

Scummybear, you need to lighten up a little. Just understand that pollution is not a partisan myth. People have been polluting the Earth for as long as we have been around. Recently however, especially in the last 30 years, pollution has gotten a LOT worse. Ever heard the phrase "The solution to pollution is dilution" before? I am very glad that recently the worldwide community has begun to realize the danger and slow down our pollution output. This has been mostly followed with a few exceptions. I really hate to point fingers, but several leading causes of pollution in America are big cars. People driving around big SUVs and trucks pollute a lot more than people that drive around smaller cars. I understand that some people need a big truck, trust me I know (I live in Vermont). However, someone in the middle of NYC driving a Hummer has absolutely no excuse to be polluting as much as they do. The Bush administation has also been increasing pollution by fighting against gas efficiency standards for trucks and SUVs and also allowing more pollution in the air and water. More specifically, he is allowing increased levels of mercury into the water. This aids large corporations, but harms anyone who might happen to drink water. But that's not a lot of people right?

Pollution is certainly a problem, but not nearly on the scale that certain groups and activists would have you believe. Many of these folks are nothing more than 60's hippie retreads. They're not so much pro-environment as they are anti-industry, anti-capitalist, and many just plain ole anti-American.
I work for one of the nations largest producers of electric power. Currently we are spending $1,000,000 a day to reduce emissions from our coal-fired power plants. To an extent, money well spent. But don't get all up in arms when your electric bills go up, up, up with increasing EPA regulation. That's one of the reasons gas prices are so high. I'll give you a first-hand example of whats wrong with the environmentalist movement. Several years ago we began construction on a new powerline in our service area. We jumped through all the EPA hoops before ever doing so much as putting a shovel in the ground. About a year after construction began, the project was put on hold due to contrasting power-demand forecasts. During the construction stopage, a small pond formed around one of the powerline towers due to some sitework we had done to prepare the land to support the structure. When construction resumed we received a whopping fine for disturbing a wetland WE CREATED!!
In Georgia, a group of environmentalists decided to have a special license plate fashioned, proceeds from which would go to environmental causes in Georgia. The plates sold like hotcakes, yet the environmentalists raised three shades of hell. Why? Because they thought the bald eagle/American flag license plate was "too patriotic". True colors my friends, true colors.

This is total BS. Are you really Ariana Huffington? Show me some data to support it. Btw, more recently, it's been discovered that the SUN (of all things) might me a contributor to global warming. Imagine that! He did no such thing. This is yet another false claim that has no basis in reality. The poison in question was arsenic, and involved minute levels. These fools don't realize that the environmentalists caused the SUV boom. My family had a seven passenger station wagon when I was growing up. The kind with a "way back." They can't make them anymore! The enviro-whacks successfully raised the standards so that car manufacturers had to start building seven passenger vehicles on a truck chassis, thus the birth of the SUV craze. A vehicle on a truck chassis is allowed to pollute more. If the nuts had left well enough alone, many of those SUV's would be less polluting, large vehicles built on a passenger car chassis.
