Abortions in Illinois Hit 30-Year Low Saturday, September 18, 2004 By Anthony Urti Statistics from Illinois show that the state saw a significant reduction in the number of abortions performed last year. The 10 percent drop brings Illinois to its lowest incidence of abortion in thirty years. According to Illinois Department of Health statistics, 46,945 abortions were performed in the state in 2002, but in 2003, 42,228 abortions were performed. A spokesman for the Department of Health said, “ I have no way to explain the drop.” Perhaps due to the fact that more information about the truth of abortion is being made more readily available, and has led to more people are realizing that abortion is actually the taking of life. Abstinence Education a Factor? Libby Gray of Project Reality, an Illinois-based abstinence education organization, credits that education with aiding in the reduction of the abortion numbers. “Since 1985, the state saw the teen birthrate drop to a 20-year low in 2000. Then Governor Ryan and public health officials credited abstinence training in the state as contributing to that decline. So, its wonderful to hear abortions is also at a record low,” Gray told the Illinois Leader. Some Specifics According to the statistics, Chicago’s Cook County is home to the highest incidence of abortion and saw an 11 percent drop from 2002. Statistics also show that fewer college-aged women in Illinois are having abortions. www.reclaimamerica.org/Pages/News/newspage.asp?story=2089
