A day late, but here's an epiphany I had going to work yesterday: On the way to work this morning, on the radio, there was an interview with a 105 year old WWI vet, and his descriptions of the fighting in the last months of the Great War nearly caused me to go off the road.
He remembered the gas attacks: "The worst was this strange green cloud heading towards us, with the Germans advancing behind it. All of a sudden, the wind shifted, blowing the gas straight into the face of the Germans!! They dropped like flies, caught in their own chlorine gas......They didn't just suffocate, or choke; they literally burned from within......."
And he remembers September, 1918: "it had rained for almost two weeks straight; the entire field was a sea of mud; the trenches were more like canals, with the men often hip deep, as they went on patrol. The first clear day was a massive offensive - the artillery started about 5 am, and lasted all day. I was in charge of keeping our battalion's 3 machine gun nests supplied with ammunition, so I was scurrying all over the battlefield, hoping to God I didn't get hit."
"The most horrific thing I have ever witnessed happened late in the afternoon, as the sun was setting. One division broke through the line, and charged headlong into no-man's land. They cleared the barbed wire defenses, and it looked like they might actually threaten the enemy's positions, as they were closing fast. That's when the biggest artillery explosion I have ever seen hit. Bodies, and parts of bodies flew everywhere. One poor fellow went straight up in the air, looking like a department store dummy - and when he came down, he looked more like a beanbag - all four limbs were gone. There was a twelve foot diameter crater, at the point of impact. That was the end of our 'offensive' for that day!!"Any of this sound familiar? There are yet a small (VERY small) handful of people who can remember when warfare first hit a personal (meaning the idividual started to think about the rationale behind the motivation) dis-chord among the general populace; remember, America stayed out of the Great War until near the end, because of this very fact. Now, consider the fact that this particular Vet has had to live with the wisdom, understanding, and remorse his battlefield education brought him for the rest of his life - which hasn't ended, yet!! How many more wars (including "police actions," "limited strtegic battles," "peace-keeping missions," or whatever other euphemism works) has this Vet seen since his own days of personal involvement? Does he not know something about war? He finished the interview by proudly announcing that he'd just voted in his EIGHTEENTH Presidential election "And I've only gone wrong three times - Dewey, Ford, and Bush the elder!" People, are YOUR convictions strong enough to see you through an entire century of life? Think about all of this, the next time you mindlessly lash out on the 'Net in general, and this board in particular - what price was paid for the freedom we all enjoy now? (hint - think "price of admission" ) (PS hint - liberals, all you have to do is THINK for the first time; we'll gladly give you a pass, while you adjust to the new exercize!!)

Think? Is that what you conservatives think you are doing when you decide to blindly follow George W. Bush around like a dog on a leash?
