Something's wrong these days with the Boy Scouts of America. I'm not talking about moral problems-- although there have been plenty of those lately (gay scout leaders, and most recently, child pornography by the president of the scouting association). No, I'm talking about the random and inexplicable deaths and injuries that have occurred this summer all across the United States.
On Thursday, August 11, an eight year old girl was killed by a falling oak-tree which smashed into a picnic table at a Jersey Shore Council Boy Scout Camp. Without warning, it apparently toppled with a loud crack. The weather was perfect and the tree wasn't in a pre-damaged condition, or so we are told.
Last month, four adult scout-leaders were electricuted while setting up a mess-tent at the Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia. Five others were struck by lightening or drowned in outings in California, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Utah. All of them are dead.
The only individual who evaded injury, in this long string of catastrophes, was a Boy Scout-- not a scout-leader. This Boy Scout was the kid who got lost in Utah, but, exercising the skills his father had taught him, headed toward a lake where he was rescued after a three day manhunt.
Now folks, something's wrong here. I was a boy scout myself, back in the day. Incidents like these were few and far between. I wholeheartedly believe in what the Boy Scouts stand for. So I want to know, what's going on? The way I see it there are four possibilities:
1. A decline in safety precaution by modern scout-leaders who make the mistake of thinking a forest-excursion is the same thing as spending a day at a city park.
2. Divine judgment on adult scout-leaders who, over the past few years, have embraced homosexuals into their ranks and who most recently, were found guilty of the most vile forms of immorality-- child pornography, personified by the Director of Scouts.
3. Inadequate training for scout-leaders who are unprepared to handle the rigors of forest-excursions. (You have to admit, having two scout-leaders DROWN due to lack of swimming skill is truly absurd by the old standards. Every boy scout has to earn a "swim badge".)
4. Or, perhaps the Scout-Leaders never were Boy Scouts!
The way things currently stand, this cherished organization is really going down-hill fast. Parents are pulling their boys out, and with good cause. There is obviously a major failure mechanism in the leadership structure-- morally and in terms of survival skills.
