So, in 2000 I got a $300.00 check in the mail for a retroactive tax cut. I presumably save that same $300.00 in taxes every year since. Well, since 2000, gas prices have gone from a then outrageous average of $1.54/gallon (wouldn't love to have that back), to a completely obsurd $2.00/gallon now. I am now paying $50.00 a month for full benefits at work, not because my boss is a cheap prick, but because his costs to cover each person has gone up $100.00 per month. The price of just about everything is going up to cover the rising cost of gas, and forget about flying anywhere for the holidays.
My state is out 250,000 jobs since Bush took office and foreclosures and bankruptcies continue to be at record rates. A big reason my state lost so many jobs is that we rely heavily on manufacturing. Bush had some tariffs in place to help get the steel industry up and running, but rescinded those tariffs because of pressure from the EU. My brother and his friends are all going to Iraq because they thought it was a good idea to join the National Guard to help get through school, not expecting to be sent into combat with the crappy vehicles they let them drive during drill.
So basically, in exchange for my $300.00 rebate, and $300.00 extra per year in my pocket, I spend $600.00 more dollars on health insurance, about $260.00 more a year on gas (I go through about 10 gallons a week), and my general cost of living is up. On top of that, a lot of my friends are out of work and struggle to keep their home, my brother might be sent to war where he will drive around in a vehicle with less armor than your typical H2, and take fire from insurgents that weren't even in Iraq when we started the operation there.
Does anyone think I can give back the $300.00 and volunteer to pay the extra $300.00 a year to get everything to go back to normal?
