“To know a person’s religion we need not listen to his profession of faith but must find his brand of intolerance.” Eric Hoffer
As a liberal I find it presumptuous that a far right conservative pundit would tell us what we believe. It is interesting that a political philosophy comes to stand for one’s religion. Words can mean a lot of things and if one is sloppy with definitions then I guess you can say liberalism is a religion.
But consider that Coulter then says there is an underlying mental disease that creates liberalism? Would that disease be the Enlightenment and the foundations of our constitutional democracy? Consider that among liberalism’s key ideas are individual freedom, justice, and fairness and you have some pretty good symptoms. But Coulter isn’t interested in political philosophy, what she is interested in is a scapegoat for her worldview. What is her world view?
I read the interview Human Events had recently with Ms Coulter and there is not a single substantive question or should I say answer. I found the reference to Whitewater funny as millions were spent on what amounted to a witch-hunt. Compare that with the Delay investigation or the many other recent political investigations? But where’s the meat? What does Anne Coulter believe? She claims to be a Christian but there is nothing Christian in her work or behavior I can find. I don’t think Christians spend their lives criticizing others; I always thought there was more to Christianity.
Andrew Sullivan probably said it best, “the problem with Coulter is that she is a form of camp, is she not? The minute you take her seriously, you lose grip on her reality. She’s not a social or political commentator. She’s a drag queen impersonating a fascist. I don’t even begin to believe she actually believes this stuff. It’s post-modern performance-art.”
Is it performance or is it an act for attention and money, one wonders. But then what is one to make of her place among conservatives? Doesn’t that really point back to the emptiness of conservative politics today that Ann Coulter is representative of their ideas?
Let me close with another Hoffer quote.
“Passionate hatred can give meaning and purpose to an empty life. Thus people haunted by the purposelessness of their lives try to find a new content not only by dedicating themselves to a holy cause but also by nursing a fanatical grievance.”
