Satchel Paige’s famous question how old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were is a marvelous expression. So how old would you be? This is hard to do sometimes as it is the things that occupy our days and weeks that keep us from life. Life happens while we do other things, I think Lennon said that.
The other day I am debating with a young conservative and it struck me that something is wrong with this picture. Shouldn’t I be the conservative? I am older and have made it in life. Are we not supposed to grow into conservationism as we grow out of our youthful enthusiasms?
I thought if we start out conservative where do we go from there? Every so often you hear of someone changing ideologies or parties or whatnot and that becomes proof that we do change. I am never sure of that as I wonder if they didn’t really belong there in the first place. A woman who lived near us left her family for a gay relationship. Did she wake up that day gay, no, but finally she was true to her herself. But being gay is a more fundamental piece of our makeup than being liberal or conservative.
Back to the young conservative, how can one be young and conservative? Isn’t that an oxymoron? I remember thinking back when I was young how we were all about changing the world with our protests, with our complaints that things aren’t as they should be, and that good things were possible if everyone tried. Up to a point that protest worked but there is always reaction to change and it is often negative.
So if you start conservative do you become more conservative or liberal? And if you start liberal do you become more liberal or conservative. Life experiences can make big differences, I have always thought raising children makes one more liberal. But just maybe the old ideas were never valid and age has nothing to do with it. How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?
