About five years ago I played this computer game called Deus ex that involved a bunch of archaic, secret conspiracies and the exploits of a EuroCon in a black trenchcoat fighting them.
Since then, I've had a nagging question; Just who the heck are the Illuminati?

"Illumanti" is a term made popular by author Dan Brown in his book, Da Vinci Code, although the term hearkens back much further to the origins of the Templar and Masonic associations. Illuminati are supposedly a group of enlightened individuals, bound by secret association, usually semi-religious, thought to be involved in political intrigue to shape the destiny of countries. The Vatican, ie, Opus Dei, has often been invoked as a part of this scheme.
Whether or not the Illuminati are real, is doubtful. Of course, there were historical groups which claimed to hold secrets surrounding the fate of Christ or the holy grail (such as the Priory of Sion, a medieval French group which claimed to have archival evidence that Christ survived crucifixion and fled to France with Mary Magdeline). Brown mentions this in his book. But there's no real evidence that the Priory still exists, as Brown claims. And as for the Masons, nothing has ever been uncovered to confirm a mass political or religious scheme.

It seems to me that they are one of those groups that are always surrounded by conspiracy theories with little fact to support it.
But it does make for some entertaining ready though!

Aren't they the Bilderberg's and Tri-Laterals? The rich and powerful who meet secretly and plan the future of the human race according to a tiny majority of elitists.
The Bilderbergs are an international organization - very secretive, very powerful. They have a limited membership by invitation only. Some are Americans.
The Trilaterals are important figures in Politics and Business in the USA. Presidents, Senators and other political figures have been or are members.
Their purpose includes globalization. You've heard of the One Worlders? That's what these groups represent.
