I believe this procedure is done primarily in China, by families who want a male child rather than a female child and can only have one child per couple. If the firstborn isn't male, it is commonly killed. This has caused all sorts of problems for the Chinese. I have never heard of this happening in the U.S.

Unfortunately, you are very misinformed.

Insanity reigns supreme. The penalty for child slaying was, under English common law, death.

It is particularly nasty. What are the reasons for this procedure being carried out in the US? I can't believe it is just if the mother does not want the child. In this country it would be illegal for those reasons. The only reason I can think is if the child being born would somehow result in the death of the mother and child. Saving one to avoid the loss of both.

I wish these people would just get fixed and stop having babies to begin with. If you are enough of an idiot to believe that PBA is right, I'm sure mother nature whould say "don't let the door hit you in the ass" as they made their way out of the gene pool.

When the doctor walked into Exam room #3 and said "it's your life or the baby's" after only 23 weeks I had to make the most upsetting decision of my life. As you can guess, since I am alive to tell this story, that baby is not. I was diagnosed with cancer shortly after I found I was pregnant. Prognosis- With the added physical strains of pregnancy- 6 months. My baby would not even make it full term and I could not undergo Kimotherapy during gestation. I did follow through with the abortion. I was still a newlywed, then. I had just bought a house and a new car with my new husband and I was looking forward to having a family of my own. Unfortunatley, without the abortion- that wouldn't have been possible. Instead I now have 3 beautiful children and have a chance to make a difference in more women's lives involved in the same situation. I do not agree with partial-birth abortions unless it may result in the death of the mother. If the option was not available several years ago I would not be here today. If I had to do it over again...I would have to say I would. I would do it for my husband, my parents, my brothers and sisters and most importantly, for the 3 beautiful children I now have. I do regret the result of my first pregnancy and that wound will NEVER heal, but that unfortunate sacrifice resulted in the greatest gifts I could ever recieve- Bryce, Lindsey and Abby.

It's my understanding (as a nurse) that they don't have to do a partial birth in a situation such as the one you describe. There are other procedures that are less physically traumatic for a sick mother at twenty-three weeks. I know someone who was misdiagnosed with cancer and treated with chemo for six months, only to find out the "tumor" they were trying to kill was a baby. He is fine. Personal stories aside, I think in general, the medically ethical thing to do is to treat women for their medical conditions when necessary and hope for the best for their unborn. Glad you are happy and healthy. Times are changing! www.danhosp.org/HealthNews/Reuters/NewsStory0701200327.htm

Erin,
I am pro choice, but PBA is just murder. your unborn's address is of no consequence. if a mother's life is in danger then i think she should have the right to have the child removed but without murdering it on the way out. A 6 month old fetus or rather child may very well live. I think that in all cases that the child deserves a fighting chance no matter how many months old it is but especially in the third trimester when we know we can do things to help. Erin what you did was wrong and selfish. deal with it. N

Senerio:
There are two of us adrift in a baloon. You're unconscious and the balloon will crash into the atlantic and we'll may both die if we're not rescued soon.
I stand a better chance of survival if i toss you overboard but you'll die for sure.
some may argue that i have the right to toss you off. some may say i should wait until i'm close enough to the water to toss you off and let date deal with you.
I don't think that many would agree that it is necessary or right for me to kill you before tossing you off. I don't think that any would say i have the right to kill you because it is inconvenient for me to have you around but that is the stance of many PBA activists.
i think that persons who advocate abortion for any reason other than to save a mother's life are selfish, yes in the case of rape as well. I mean really, is my comfort worth the another's life? again, i am pro-choice but i also think that ll life deserves a chance no matter how old it is or where it currently lives.

Nubian, I think you should avoid the term 'tossing off' in future. It takes on a whole different meaning in my part of the globe.
That aside...
I get the feeling that since it was a doctor who told Erin it was eigther the baby or her, then there must have been further complications.
I tend to think that the doctor would be in a better situation to judge than a few people in an internet chat room with no access to the details. Don't be so quick to come to conclusions, wait till the full picture emerges.
Erin?

Do you think that Dr. Kavorkien made correct descions just because he was a doctor? What about that Dr. in England? What gives doctors this God-like quality? Just because they believe their God doesn't mean they are correct.

If the doctor made the decision based on a belief about him being god then of course the doctor should be struck off and charged with an offence.
However, i doubt the decsion was based on that.
My point was that the doctor would know if the mothers life was indeed in danger if PBA was not administered.
Not being a doctor, I do not know whether or not PBA was essential in saving the mothers life. All I can do is trust for now that the right decision was made.
Of course, if anyone can come up with evidence that the doctor acted unprofessionally then I would be glad to come to a decision one way or the other. Thing is, we dont have the details of this case in front of us. So, like I said, we cannot judge.

All PBA is done when they want the outcome to be a dead baby! I moderate three boards and have seen a number of "personal stories." In many cases several different ones come from the same IP address.
A PBA is no easier on the mother than an induced live birth. Honestly, why would you think killing the baby while he/ she is in the birth canal is less physical trauma for the mother?
