This is an interesting look into the idea and uses of cancel culture. "The biggest conceptual weakness of the essay is the failure to flesh out the standard by which Applebaum is clearly judging the cases she discusses. There is a difference between sanctions imposed by the state and private individuals exercising their right to not associate, and it is not clear that Applebaum has given any serious thought to how we ought to judge the latter." ' The Case Not Made: A Response to Anne Applebaum’s “The New Puritans”' "This will not be another essay claiming that “cancel culture” does not exist, though many writers I respect have taken this line. It is a rebuttal to what was yet another poorly thought out essay from a writer who ought to know better at a publication that ought to have higher standards. I would like to draw attention to the structural factors in play for this particular issue, and the implications they have for not just our particular political moment but our future." www.liberalcurrents.com/the-case-not-made-a-response-to-anne-applebaums-the-new-puritans/And this: 'Cancel culture, redux'leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2021/10/cancel-culture-redux.html#moreOne example below:'Texas lawmaker says 850 books ranging from race to sexuality could cause 'discomfort'' www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/texas-lawmaker-says-850-books-ranging-race-sexuality-cause-discomfort-rcna3953

I found it interesting that Putin used 'cancel culture' as a distraction. Oddly Fox media too uses dog whistles as if they are saying something meaningful. One hates to think that Americans are fooled with words that are often meaningless given complex issues. 'Offensive political dog whistles: you know them when you hear them. Or do you?' www.vox.com/the-big-idea/2016/11/7/13549154/dog-whistles-campaign-racism
