How low will Obama and Hillary go in their campaigning. They seem to be more blatent in trying to buy votes with government giveaways, etc. www.politibyte.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=36&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 On the one hand the Democrats chastise Bush obout his "out of control" spending on the war; yet, they propose even more spending on entitlements. I guess they are not really against the spending, just on the program that it is being spent on. The Republicans are not much better as they are promising tax cuts when reality dictates that we really should pay off these debts that we have accrued. Tax cuts in this environment really are just a small step above the outright entitlements that the democrats want to give. There is no one speaking responsibly about what we should do. I believe we need to get this war behind us (either win the thing or get out) and let's spend a few years focused on paying down our debt. It's not glamorous, but it's the right thing to do.

First thing We The People need to demand in one voice are limits to campaign spending. Level the playing field. Then we can demand that candidates and elected representatives cannot accept monies from any special interest groups. Hey, the founding fathers sought to ensure that the individual was soveriegn. No King, Emporers or Popes dictating policy. Anybody working for a company or belonging to a fraternal organization or church has the right to vote for the individual they believe who will represent their interest. The business, organization or church does not vote as an entity and should thereby be prohibited from donating any gifts, money or considerations of any nature whatsoever to gain favored representation over the individuals of this nation. K street must go. Only then may we begin to talented individuals ready to do the job they've been elected to do rather than needing to beg to the tune of $10,000.00 per week in donations just to run by the next term.

Tax cuts, directed in the correct ways, do stimulate the economy and increase revenue to the government, so the premise of this thread is just, well, wrong, in my opinion.
I do agree that the Democrats seem to be running on who can "give" away the most goodies. Much of their base doesn't understand that they ( the government ) can't give you anything that it doesn't take away from you first.

Since Liberals have been criticized on this board for being uneducated regarding economics, explain to me - do the math - how cutting taxes (which, by the way were cut by W during his defict orgy) will fix the current enormous deficit. And, in the process, explain how that and that alone (pretty much the Republican Congressional single answer to all things economic - oh, other than not allowing anyone else to spend as much money as they did) will fix it.
Then, explain how the wealthiest country ever on the face of the earth cannot afford to provide for its elderly, disadvantaged, and sick, much like every other (less rich) civilized first-word nation does.

"the gov can't give you anything which it didnt take away from you first."
What, like fire protection? public schools? public highways? Sewage treatment - clean water - police forces - the military - EMS service - garbage collection - food and drug oversight - Medicare - Medicade - Social Security?
What Conservatives fail to see in this equation is that there are many, useful and necessary things that We the People decide not to be 'given' to us, but for us to pool our vast, unprecedented resources to pay for an accomplish in order to promote the "general Welfare."
There is not any one of the items mentioned in par. 2 above that Conservatives would do away with and rant that they were things the government gave us that they first took away from us.
