1. The history of the western world and the United States is one of Liberals/Progressives dragging Conservatives kicking and screaming into a better, more just, safer, healthier, more prosperous world.
2. The most hide-bound, card-carrying, openly Liberal group that ever existed saved the darling of Conservative bedrock, the free enterprise system, from total collapse and disrepute during the 30’s. Regularly in the Midwest, 60,000 farmers – long ignored at the time by the right –gathered at Communist Rallies and tens of thousand of auto workers sang the Internationale; the banking system, the stock exchange, and the very basic, blindly-trusted principles of the economy were saved by the imaginative initiative of Liberals trying to find something that simply worked when Conservatives were sitting on their butts, pleading ‘no’ and don’t do nothing. Sound familiar?
3. Freeing the Slaves and passing and enforcing Civil Rights Laws when Conservatives were obstructing, objecting, and threatening peaceful marchers (again, sound familiar?)
4. The FDA – and the safety of what goes in your and your children’s’ mouths.
5. The National Parks System
6. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid – all butted and opposed by Conservatives just as they are doing this very minute on healthcare.
7. The most powerful military in the history of the world, built up, advanced, and maintained by the FDR administration and handed over to the future of standing against Communism.
8. The EPA.
9. Embracing the first paragraph of the Constitution, regarding We the People (not Us as solely self-interested Individuals) forming a more perfect Union (not a string of gated communities and sink-or-swim go it on your own indifference) in order to promote the general Welfare.
10. For open-mindedness; for attempting (even if they fail) to apply common sense to complex, evolving problems; for putting the most basic human value, empathy and concern for your fellow man, into the machinery that makes a super-power run. Standing for the rule of law and not men or circumstance.
