Any idea who these so called socialists are? Seems we have a republic of elected representatives, last I checked.

But I offer this thought experiment, if people had moderate prosperity, good services, and security, do you think they would really care if they lived under a so called democratic nation or for that matter any other form of government? If the state has any purpose it must maintain enough order so that the above items are possible. Wasn't Nazi Germany a democratic republic and that didn't help much when the economy collapsed.

Interesting that half the replacement of the Nazi-not socialist Germany was the Communist-not democratic People’s Democratic Republic of East Germany. Kind of like the “fair skies” pollution oriented program of the Republicans, not to mention so many others.

Nowhere in the US constitution is a economic system referred to, pro or con, for the country. And since the dawn of the 19th century, the US has had varying degrees of socialist programs which the majority of Americans fully supported and still support. Public schools, public fire and police departments, sewage treatment and clean water supplies, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid – virtually everything the government runs, including the military.

Most of the most advanced first-world nations, who are our friends and allies – and some of whom have better standards of living than us – are socialist in large degrees, and their citizens are healthy, happy, and perfectly satisfied. And not one of them brandishes Nazism or sinister, insidious plots to eat your children.

The world has grown up, and a blend of socialism and free enterprise (as is the case with most of our friends and allies) has become necessary to deal with the problems of a modern, complex world and societies.

When the Republican Party and Conservatives grow up, and become a part of the modern, more complex world, maybe they can clear away some of their baseless, childish bogeymen and stop ranting about stuff that makes no sense.
