A Martian is asked who the better candidate for America would be in 2008. The Martian, we'll call X, is quite smart and seeks first to understand the 'values' and 'visions' that underlie the American democratic republic.
Since each candidate's platform and issues are outlined and fundamentally controlled by the party platform, X reviews both recent and past history to see which party better aligns its values with the core values of America.
X lists as key or core values of Americans: individual rights, individual responsibility, economic well being, respect for nature, freedom from religion interference, free association, charitable impulses, and always a better life for their children. X notes the visions Americans share that this is a free country and a land of opportunity where dreams can come true for everyone.
Next X looks at the past several years and the actual statistics that prove whether the values are being upheld and by whom. While X doesn't know what pudding is, he realizes it is what happens that matters and not what you say happened or will happen. X does not engage in speculative hope nor negativity, a trait common among partisans.
X discovers that if you are wealthy the republicans would be the best choice as they support corporate bailouts, excuse corporate crime as business as usual, and support tax structures that allow the wealthiest to reward themselves more of the bounty that is created by America's social infrastructure and knowledge.
If the American is middle class, working class, or working poor, the democrats are a better choice as they support healthcare, education, societal safety nets, and regulatory reforms that support all people. X notes that wages for working people have remained stagnant and opportunities have decreased due to corporations that seek out cheap labor in America or abroad.
X closely examines views towards governance, tolerance, diversity, and the right of the individual to lead their life without governmental or religious constraints and has decided that Obama / Biden provide the most American conception of values and independence as well as a recognition that government is for more than just protection of wealth and privilege. If X could, they'd vote OBAMA/BIDEN.
America's brilliant vision has been lost, time for change.
