April 20 — At least three senior United Nations officials are suspected of taking multimillion-dollar bribes from the Saddam Hussein regime, U.S. and European intelligence sources tell ABCNEWS.



One year after his fall, U.S. officials say they have evidence, some in cash, that Saddam diverted to his personal bank accounts approximately $5 billion from the United Nations Oil-for-Food program.

In what has been described as the largest humanitarian aid effort ever undertaken, the U.N. Oil-for-Food program began in 1996 to help Iraqis who were suffering under sanctions imposed following the first Gulf War.

The program allowed Iraq to sell limited amounts of oil, under supposedly tight U.N. supervision, to finance the purchase of much-needed humanitarian goods.

Most prominent among those accused in the scandal is Benon Sevan, the Cyprus-born U.N. undersecretary general who ran the program for six years.

Well, actually so far none of our wars have ever defended our country in the sense that you've stated. In fact, we've jumped into wars in some very odd starting points if you trace history. This is no different whatsoever in my eyes. So if I learn from history then I'd have to admit this war is indirectly justified for those that are against and easily justifiable for those for it, of course. And I am quite certain Bush had more than one reason as stated previously. Congress was presented with many many reasons and shame on them if a couple feel like they've been lied to. They should have researched it further if they had any doubts. Shame of those for having set the weight of blame on Bush when he was just as informed as any of the congressman. They were all presented with the same information and all made the same decisions. To hear of anyone claim that "Bush lied!!! Whaaaa" Come on now, get some knowledge of how our system works. Anyone congressman could have researched more just like anyone else. If you say "well, Bush twisted it when he presented it. " Again that doesn't make any freaking sense because all were given the identical scripts. And even now we have the idiotic parade titled the 911 commission to investigate further. So if there are lies from Bush then he should get impeached but otherwise it's all a bunch of anti-republican rant. If a libby really cares about the deficit then I say return your tax refund check to the government.... that will assist I'm sure. Otherwise by endorsing that tax check you've endorsed Bush's decision to give you that money back.

And just as i was about to put quote after quote of showing how the reagan/bush sr. administration supported Saddam, from 1980-1990 (just four months before the gulf war), the only sites i can find to prove this are socialist - meaning biased. But the very least i can say, is that Saddam's rise to power was supported (early on) by the US and if you believe supported simply means "Go Saddam!" and not "Here Saddam, have some money and build those ties with Kuwait - but dont forget who helped you " - you're a fool.

I have been a few places. What exactly do you mean MULTI-EVERYTHING.
In Korea 98% of the population was Korean and the language was Korean. In Japan 99% percent of the population was Japanese and the Language was Japanese. Even the Ainu speak it.
In Italy over 96 % percent of the Population is Italian or Sicilian with Italian being the common language.
The list goes on.
In America on the other hand you can find every DAMNED ethnic persuasion on the face of the earth. You want to hear languages, we got em all. Malay, Chinese, Italian, French, German. Ad Infintium.

I read a whole bunch of comments from a whole bunch of people. Too many to respond to.
I am going to respond to, why people enlist. I did. To fight for my country. Wherever that fight was. Hopefully outside the Continental limits of the U.S.
Why? I would rather break things and smash them in someone Else's country. Which I did until the Politicians sold us out. (Another story)
There is a WAR on. It is not in Iraq. That is a battle, as is Afghanistan, the Phillipines, and a dozen other places.
We don't sign up to defend here on the Mother soil but rather to take it to them as we did in WW I, WW II, and Korea as well as Viet Nam.
We continue the tradition. You will not find it written anywhere that an army must defend the homeland, "on the homeland". Indeed if that occurs you are too late responding. You have probably lost the war. Ask the Germans.

President Bush did not lie. He never said WMD was the sole purpose or even the purpose for going into Iraq. The Liberals love that spin. Tain't true. Doesn't become true just cause they want it to.
