Tomorrow, Mike Tyson will take on Kevin McBride in a world heavyweight, non-title boxing matchup here in Washington DC. McBride is an Irish champ who's is little known in the world-- he's ranked 153 overall. Tyson is a black ex-champ of the world who has claimed that he will "gut him (McBride) like a fish". McBride, for his part, stated "I'm going to shock the world. I'm not here to lose. I'm a contender, not a pretender". Tyson, who is ranked 25th in the world, lost his title in a stunning knockout by Buster Douglas in 1990, and in his most recent fight last summer he was knocked out in the fourth round by unheralded Danny Williams. Despite these losses he is still widely respected. Although Tyson is ranked higher than McBride, McBride is younger, heavier, and has a longer arm-reach. I'll tell you right now, my vote goes to McBride. The guy's 6 feet 6 inches tall. He weighs 271 pounds. And most importantly he's Irish. Anyone who knows about boxing knows the "real deal" lies with the Irish.
Tyson's a black punk who's been jailed on rape charges and attempted bites on the ears of his opponents. A low down scum, really.
I'll be at this fight in person at the MCI center. I just hope McBride utilizes everything he's got. Because, as the smaller guy, Tyson is going to pull every move in the book. McBride is going to have to hit hard, and hit fast.
Tyson will probably be quicker because he's lighter. But if McBride can summon all his power and land a few solid hits on that flat black nose, this will be a victory we won't soon forget!

Tyson is fighting for money, and he doesn't have to win to get paid. He's already signed the fight contract. The thing about boxing is you get paid just to show up. Whether he wins or loses he gets paid the same. Tyson will get his ass whupped and he knows it, but he doesn't care. He has no pride, only a ton of debt. He's millions in debt and he needs a payday more than he needs a victory. His days as a serious competitor are gone and he knows it. He'd be sitting on the beach somewhere if he weren't up to his eyeballs in IRS shit. He's not there to win, he's there to cash in. Tyson is no longer a great fighter, he's an attraction, and as long as he's alive people will pay lots of money to see him get his ass kicked. We love to see a train wreck, and we pay good money to see it. I'm guessing that's just fine with him. If you pay $49.95 to see this fight on pay per view you are only contributing to the Mike Tyson get-out of-debt fund. Mike Tyson will go home with your money and you will wish you had taken your wife out to eat instead.

I just want to add this quote by Mcbride, which I think is great:
"It only takes one punch to choose a champion. I've got that punch. When I hit Tyson, it will feel like all of Ireland has hit him."

McBride carries the day! Thanks to whoever else voted for him in my poll.
This was one hell of a fight. Totally awesome. I can't tell you how good it felt to watch Tyson make a true coward out of himself and even try to break McBride's arm (what a cheat move) in an attempt to push things his way.
But, Irish prevailed. They didn't give him a chance (but we sure did!) and now the Green Dream has been born. Did I just coin that phrase? Must have!
I'm pretty hoarse right now (so much yelling) "Come on Irish! Double up Old School!". Made kind of a stir myself in the crowd on second tier. Oh but it was a great time! A few of Tyson's people were shouting back angrily at me and my buddies. Security was on hand to prevent violence erupting in the crowd. We had the Irish flag with us! What a thrill, I'll tell you.
The punk quit knowing he was losing.
I'm off now to McFadden's Bar and Grill but wanted to drop a line for TNR and the rest of you, haha! This was a victory for all of us.

Congrats on your victory.
Tyson is nothing but a thug , whiner and convicted felon. The account I read this morning had him head butting McBride in a cheap move of desperation and it still didn't help.
Enjoy the moment and I hope he's done for good, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him come out of the woodwork when he needs some more cash.

Just an update:
Due to his new victory over Tyson, McBride has bounced all the way up from being ranked 153 in the world to 48 in the world.

Kevin McBride sucks also. As much as he'd like to believe it, he didn't beat the 1988 version of Mike Tyson. Heck, he didn't even beat the 1997 Mike Tyson. He "beat" a washed up loser who should be delivering pizzas. I don't know how in the world he jumped 100 places in the world heavyweight rankings for this victory. McBride won because Tyson quit. Way to go Kevin! Tyson was up on the cards when he threw in the towel. He was out of shape, and as I said was not there to win. He was there to cash in, and figured six rounds was enough to satisfy the crowd and give McBride his token win. Tyson gave everybody what they wanted. He gave the fans six more rounds of Tyson, gave McBride a win over his childhood idol, and himself a $5 million payday. He's the equivalent of a boxing ring whore. Everybody got their "nut", and he got his money.

TNR: What do you mean he didn't beat the 1997 Mike Tyson? This recent bout was his first fight with Tyson, ever. McBride doesn't "suck". I don't care what the media says. The guy will make it to the upper ranks, rest assured. He's rising to the top, slowly. Yes he's had a few losses. The real loss that people use to humiliate him with was the knockout by an opponent who had previously lost 17 fights. But, live and learn. Tyson knew he was losing and even said so after he threw in the towel. McBride brings his own style to the ring. No, it's not Muhammad Ali. It's raw guts. Full absorption power. Massive blows. Endurance. And Tyson quit because he was losing. Kevin would have won. He was getting stronger with each round. He scored a fantastic uppercut to Tyson's jaw and pushed the piece of shit to the floor of the ring. Tyson quit because he didn't want to "lose to this caliber of fighters". What a laugh. Forget the "caliber" and the linguistics and look at the raw power. Now the real work begins for Kevin. From a publicity standpoint, he made it past the big obstacle and now he'll have to take on more energetic guys in the upper tier. But, with the determination he's shown this far, the only direction I can see him moving is FORWARD. Incidentally, I have to say that his remarks to the media in the pre-fight press conference were the most touching I've ever heard from any boxer. "My father taught me how to make a fist... his name was Kevin also..." Put that against the sheer arrogance which emanates from other boxers (most notably Tyson) who said he would "gut McBride like a fish". Well, who's laughing now? The fighting Irish, that's who.

That's about the only pace he's capable of.
I bring your memory back to the Ali days when he defeated a fighter by the name of Foreman. McBride's style isn't unique, the raw power, massive blow style was started by Lean, Mean, Grilling Machine George. This guy is no George Foreman.
I hope you don't honestly believe that Tyson honestly believed that he was going to gut anyone like a fish. It's called PR.

Yes Ian, I honestly believed Mike Tyson would bring a bait and tackle box to the ring and even toss a few reels back and forth during the match! Never did I think that PR was the motivation behind Mike's comment.
Get real. Of course it was PR. My point is that it's nice to see someone who isn't self-absorbed and walks the walk, not just the talk.
Yes, McBride is on the slower side. But he's bigger than most, and that's the reason why. I'll tell you this much: a smaller dude would have gotten creamed by Tyson in the earlier rounds (bloody head butts and hard knocks). Anyway, I guess McBride has become a personal favorite since I was at the fight myself for the sole purpose of cheering him on. You had to be there, I guess.
We'll see what happens down the road.

Yes Ian, I honestly believed Mike Tyson would bring a bait and tackle box to the ring and even toss a few reels back and forth during the match! Never did I think that PR was the motivation behind Mike's comment. My question wasn't whether you believed that he was literally go into the ring and slit McBride's stomach open. My question was whether you honestly believed that Tyson honestly believed that he was going to kick McBride's ass. My point was that it isn't true self-absortion on Tyson's part any more, it's a pure PR campaign. By the way, I'm not a fan of Ali-like bravado, I've always been a die-hard Frazier fan. I also like a gutsy type of fighter as well and from what I've seen and heard McBride seems like a good guy, I just don't think he has the skills to make it all the way.

Ian:
The great thing about skill, is that it can be gained with experience. The great thing about experience is that it's gained with determination. The great thing about determination is that it comes from the inside. And the great thing about the inside is that it remains unconquerable.
