He was the lesser of two evils in that we chose to assist Iraq in combating Iran. To say that he was one of our "biggest allies" is certainly a stretch.

He was the lesser of two evils in that we chose to assist Iraq in combating Iran. To say that he was one of our "biggest allies" is certainly a stretch. I might add that the choice of Saddam as an ally was foisted on Pres Reagan as a result of Carter's failed policy with Iran. Carter hung the Shah out to dry, which allowed a violently anti-american fundamentalist theocracy to take over in Iran. Iraq then picked a fight with Iran, and Reagan was forced to choose between supporting the "Butcher of Baghdad" or risking Iraq losing it's war and both Iraq and Iran being ruled by aforementioned theocracy.
