I too work for civic development group. Its pretty much the only job i can get in my area that is flexible enough to work around going to school. i have to hear no three times befor i give up or else i get fired. there are certain guidelines that i must follow and am always being monitored be it by my manager the call center manager or the corporate office. there are rules to this game tho i and follow them for my own job safety. Yes i get hung up on alot and get cussed out but i dont really mind i just move on to the next call. when some one askes me to take them off the list its almost a sigh of releif for me because i dont have to push something on someone who doesnt want it and i say of course have a wonderfull day. that is the trick dont just hang up on them because your going to get called back. alot! ask to be taken off the list. the organizations that i raise money for hire the company that i work for even tho they only recieve between 10-20 percent of the money raised. really the only thing i do have to say is that if you dont want the calls tell the telemarketer to take you off the list. its the law oh and dont think that the national do not call list will save you. because i have a rebuttle for that but as far as in michigan the state do not call list will stop me in my tracks. also the telephone sales rule excempts non profits and political calls from the caller id requirements. thats why they come up unknown .............. just my 2 cents peace

Surely you guys would be against a law against telemarketing.
Isn't it interfering with the economic liberty the companies who use them? Who wants the government getting involved in ever day life? Not you guys as you keep reminding me.
More and more people become dependant on the law to sort out their problems - whats next, a nationlised health service???

And the best way to deal with telemarkerters by the way is to say the following
"I'm really interested in your product... But I'm just heading out for a while. Tell you what... why don't you give me your home number, and I'll call you at around six o clock next saturday and we can discuss the deal then?"

No, the best way is by saying "Please put me on your Do Not Call List" They'll read you whatever statement telling you they're doing it, leave their toll-free number, and leave you alone. Unless of course, they're not a legit company, then you can pass all the laws and fines you want. They'll still call you 24-7 the rest of your life, and you won't get my legit offers.

I assume you are a kind decent human being and will politely say, "I'm not interested... But thank you!" That would be the best way to handle the situation, but people are rude, sadly. However, it would also be polite to not call during dinner hours. For example, 5pm to 8pm. I'm not saying that the company you work for, Alison, doesn't do that or that other companies do. It was just be being polite in return. Also, who knows how many telemarketer calls I've had in my life and I can only think of one time that i actually heard a voice speak to me. They've all hung up before I could even say "hello..."

Or say, "I am really interested, can you hold for a sec while I get my credit card." Then just put the phone down and go about you business. It is fun to see how long they stay on the line.

Alison it's not your fault, unless you are agressive, rude, pushy, manipulative etc. Probably you are not.
But the telemarketing company is not treating me with respect. It is treating me like meat with a credit card. And if we outlaw telemarketing those companies will spend their money in some other way and you or someone else can get a job like that. Or companies that do not rely on invading people's privacy will do a little better and be able to hire more people.
We can live without telemarketing.
And so can you.
